Empowered for Impact: Exploring the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (pt1)
Listen to last week’s sermon Empowered for Impact – Exploring the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (pt1)

The sermon began with a powerful reminder of the significance of Pentecost, described as the “birthday of the Church.” This pivotal event marked the beginning of the Church Age, a period spanning from Pentecost to the rapture of Jesus Christ, as described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. Pastor Eric emphasizes that the Church Age is the best time to embrace salvation, urging listeners not to delay their decision to follow Christ. Pentecost is more than a historical celebration; it is the moment when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church, empowering believers to fulfill their God-given mission. Acts 2:1-4 recounts how the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, enabling them to speak in tongues and boldly proclaim the Gospel. This event fulfilled Jesus’ promise in Acts 1:8 and the prophecy of Joel, where God declared He would pour out His Spirit on all people—men and women, young and old, rich and poor. Pastor Eric highlights the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, which enables believers to:
- Fulfill the Great Commission.
- Live godly lives in a godless world.
- Serve God beyond natural abilities.
- Receive power to perform supernatural acts.
The sermon contrasts the early Church’s reliance on the Holy Spirit with the modern Church’s tendency to rely on programs, entertainment, and watered-down messages. Pastor Eric passionately declares that what the Church needs today is not more gimmicks but a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can convict hearts, transform lives, and empower believers to boldly proclaim the Gospel.
The Role of the Holy Spirit in the Life of a Believer
The Holy Spirit is described as a helper, guide, comforter, and source of power. Through the Holy Spirit, believers are:
- Empowered to fulfill their unique mission.
- Equipped to face challenges and opportunities.
- Transformed to become more like Jesus.
The sermon introduces the concept of spiritual gifts, which are specific abilities given to believers to serve the Church and the world. Over the coming weeks, the series will explore these gifts in depth, focusing on their purpose and application.
Categories of Spiritual Gifts
Pastor Eric outlines three categories of spiritual gifts:
- Motivational Gifts (Romans 12): These include prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership, and mercy. Each gift is illustrated with a relatable story about a broken jar, showing how different gifts manifest in practical situations.
- Ministerial Gifts (Ephesians 4): These include apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, who are called to equip and build up the Church.
- Manifestation Gifts (1 Corinthians 12): These include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. These gifts are given by the Holy Spirit for the common good and are distributed as He wills.
Key Principles About Spiritual Gifts
- Awareness Leads to Stewardship: Believers should not be ignorant of spiritual gifts. Understanding these gifts allows for their intentional and effective use.
- Every Believer Receives a Gift: The Holy Spirit distributes gifts to each believer, as stated in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.
- Seek the Best Gifts with Humility: While believers are encouraged to desire greater gifts, they must submit to the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit, who distributes gifts as He determines.
- Gifts Serve the Greater Good: Spiritual gifts are meant to edify the Church and should not be used for personal promotion or status.
- Gifts Remain Relevant Today: Contrary to the belief that gifts ceased with the apostles, Pastor Eric affirms their continued relevance, citing Acts 2:39 and 1 Corinthians 1:7 as evidence.
- Gifts Are Recognized by the Body: Most gifts are evident to others in the Church and do not require self-promotion.
- Collaboration with the Holy Spirit: While gifts are supernatural, they require the believer’s active partnership and grounding in a local church.
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
The sermon concludes with a reminder that spiritual gifts are given for the common good and the edification of the Church. They are not limited to Sunday services but can be active in various contexts, such as small groups, fellowship halls, and even parking lots. Pastor Eric underscores the importance of being grounded in a local church, where gifts can be recognized, nurtured, and used effectively.
Pastor Eric calls on the congregation to eagerly desire spiritual gifts, embrace the Holy Spirit’s work in their lives, and commit to using their gifts for God’s glory. He reminds them that the gifts are not only relevant but essential for the Church to fulfill its mission in today’s world.
