When Religious Traditions Stop Us from God’s True Calling Mark 7
Listen to last week’s sermon: When Religious Traditions Stop Us from God’s True Calling – Mark 7
A Reflection on Mark 7 and the Seven Pitfalls to Avoid a Pharisee-Like Spirit
By Pastor Eric | New Beginning Church, Rockland
The Bigger Picture of God’s Heart
In 2017, a Canadian couple refused a life-saving blood transfusion for their newborn due to their religious beliefs. The hospital, after seeking a court order, saved the child’s life by overriding the parents’ wishes. While the baby survived, the parents were devastated because their religious convictions were disregarded. This story introduces the tension Pastor Eric addressed in his sermon: What happens when religious traditions hinder us from fulfilling God’s true calling? Across cultures, denominations, and generations, well-meaning believers often miss the bigger picture of God—not due to lack of sincerity but because they prioritize rituals, traditions, and misinterpreted scripture over the heart of God.Jesus addressed this issue in Mark 7, where He rebuked the Pharisees for their misplaced priorities. Pastor Eric’s message dives into this passage, offering a warning for modern believers to avoid falling into these same traps.
Key Scripture: Mark 7:1-13
In Mark 7, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes, who were upset that His disciples did not follow the ceremonial handwashing traditions. Jesus responds by quoting Isaiah:
“These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” (Mark 7:6-7)
Jesus exposed their hypocrisy, showing how they prioritized traditions over God’s commandments, such as honoring one’s parents. This passage serves as a timeless reminder: When human traditions overshadow God’s commands, we risk misrepresenting Him and missing His heart.
The Seven Pitfalls to Avoid a Pharisee-Like Spirit
Pastor Eric outlined seven key pitfalls that the Pharisees fell into—traps that modern believers must avoid to stay aligned with God’s heart.
1. The Trap of Religion Without Relationship
The Pharisees were originally devoted to protecting Jewish culture and God’s law. Their name, meaning “set apart” in Hebrew, reflected their mission to maintain purity amidst cultural pressure. However, over time, they lost sight of the bigger picture.Instead of fostering a relationship with God, they became consumed by rituals. Jesus warned them—and us—that religion without relationship leads to spiritual emptiness.Key Point: Knowing about God is not the same as truly knowing Him.
- The Pharisees prayed, fasted, and gave, but their hearts were far from God (Matthew 23:15).
- Jesus told Nicodemus, a Pharisee, that salvation comes not from following rules but by being born again (John 3:3).
- True faith is about repentance, surrender, and a personal relationship with Jesus.
Reflection Question: Are you practicing religion, or are you pursuing a relationship with God?
2. The Trap of Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy was one of the Pharisees’ defining characteristics, and Jesus frequently rebuked them for it. They focused on outward appearances while neglecting the inward state of their hearts.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup, but inside you are full of greed and self-indulgence.” (Matthew 23:25)
Hypocrisy is living a double life—doing the right things for the wrong reasons. Pastor Eric noted that even Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, fell into this trap when he prioritized appearances over the truth of the Gospel (Galatians 2:11-13).
Key Point: God values integrity over appearances.
- Hypocrisy means acting religious for show while lacking genuine devotion.
- It’s better to be rejected by people than to be called a hypocrite by God.
Reflection Question: Are you more concerned with how others perceive you than with the state of your heart before God? Reflect on your faith: Are you practicing religion or pursuing a relationship with God? Repent of any areas where you’ve prioritized traditions, appearances, or rituals over love and compassion. Recommit to following Jesus, focusing on His love, mercy, and grace.
Pastor Eric’s sermon challenges us to examine our hearts and avoid the pitfalls the Pharisees fell into. Religion without relationship, hypocrisy, empty worship, pride, and misplaced priorities can all pull us away from God’s heart. The core of Christianity is not rituals or traditions—it’s a relationship with Jesus Christ. As Pastor Eric reminded us, “You must be born again” (John 3:3).
