Living by the Divine Code of Honour
Listen to last week’s sermon Living by the Divine Code of Honour.
As a child of a military family, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of honour in various spheres of life like in the military. God, too, operates by a divine code of honor, mentioned over 60 times in the Bible.
Defining Honour:
In the biblical context, honour means “to esteem, value, to show great respect.” It involves appreciating someone to their rightful value and elevating them to their proper rank.
Who Do We Honour?
1. God. (1 Timothy 1:17)
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
We honour God through praise, obedience, and a life fully devoted to God.
2. Parents. (Exodus 20:12)
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Honoring parents includes respect, obedience, and recognition of their God-given authority.
3. Church Leaders. (Hebrews 13:17)
Obey your leaders and submit to them…
Honouring church leaders involves recognizing their role, following their guidance, submitting to their spiritual authority and appreciating their service.
4. Government Authorities. (Romans 13:1)
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities…
Honoring those in authority outside the church acknowledges the God-given structure.
Blessings of Honor.
– Honoring God with our praise, obedience, and service opens the door to divine blessings.
– Honoring parents comes with a promise of blessing and longevity.
– Honoring church leaders contributes to the well-being of the church and individuals.
– Honoring government authorities aligns with God’s plan for order and respect.
In a culture marked by dishonor, let us commit to living by the divine code of honour. By honouring God, parents, church leaders, and those in authority, we reflect the love and respect Christ showed us.
