“Hearing the Voice of God” | John 10:27

Hearing the Voice of God

On March 14th , 2021, Pastor Eric spoke on the “The Privilege of Hearing God’s Voice”. As Christians we have privileges. Since the veil was torn in two, people no longer need to rely exclusively on prophets like they did in the Old Testament to hear from God. We can approach God ourselves. God wants to guides us and speak to us personally. In John 10:27, the Lord says,

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

If we apply what God says to us in our lives, we will be victorious.

Here are four things that will block us from hearing the voice of God:

1) Fear.

Some of us may be afraid of making a mistake. We may think we are hearing from God, but we are not; others are afraid of what God may reveal to them. In Exodus 20:18-20 (NIV) we
read:

When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the
trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear.
They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself
and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.
Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test
you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from
sinning.

2) Hearing the wrong voices.

Other voices talk to us as well, so it’s important to discern the voice of God.

In 1 John 4:1, Paul says,

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to
see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have
gone out into the world.

3) Simply not expecting God to speak to them.

Some Christians are not used to hearing from God, so they don’t expect Him to speak
to them. In Jeremiah 33:3, the Lord says,

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

4) To not place too much value on the voice of God.

Some people don’t have a personal relationship with God. They do not know Him personally.
Until they do, it will be difficult for them to hear His voice.

Jeremiah 9, verses 23 and 24 state:

This is what the Lord says: Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, declares the Lord.
