“You Ought To Be Teachers” | Hebrews 5:12

You Ought To Be Teachers

On February 28, 2021, Pastor Eric shared from Hebrews 5:12 a sermon entitled: “We Ought To Be Teachers”. As mature believers, we ought to become teachers of the Word. We do this by being an example and sharing our spiritual knowledge with new believers. In other words, helping them find Christ and grow in their Christian walk.

Some Christians are not growing spiritually. Here’s 6 reasons why:

1.We hear but we don’t listen:

We hear the words but we are not paying attention to the message, because we are distracted or disinterested. Revelation 2:7 says:

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches…

2. We hear but we don’t fear.

Fearing God (reverential fear) is not a mere fear of God, but having utmost respect for Him. Isaiah 66:5 Paul says:

Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word…

3. We hear but we don’t believe.

Faith comes by hearing. The Word of God works in us. If we do not believe, the Bible will not make sense to us.  In 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Paul states:

…when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

4. We hear but we don’t practice.

We need to apply what the Bible teaches in our life. God will remain silent until we put what we learned into practice. James 1:22 says:

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

5. We hear but we don’t try to understand.

Not understanding what God is expecting from us stunts our spiritual growth. In Hebrews 5:11, Paul says:

…It is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.

And Matthew 13:19 states:

When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart…

6. We listen but we only hear what we want to hear.

If we hear only what we want to hear we are not teachable, and our growth will stunt quickly. We are to let God’s Word shape and influence our thoughts and actions.
